The Samsung Galaxy A17 5G arrives on the smartphone market with an attractive price-performance ratio, a modern design, a bright display, and a solid battery. Nevertheless, behind such qualities inevitably lie a few compromises.
Overview
The Samsung Galaxy A17 5G arrives discreetly, like a timid upgrade amidst the flurry of smartphone launches. Successor to the Galaxy A16 5G, this entry-level model shows a price reduction compared to its predecessor, but with enhanced ambitions, particularly in terms of artificial intelligence. And while the A17 doesn't bring radical changes compared to its predecessor, some notable adjustments appear, especially concerning materials and user experience.

Launched at €229, €20 less than its predecessor, it competes directly with the Honor 400 Lite and CMF Phone 2 Pro, while offering features usually reserved for higher-end models. Equipped with a 6.7-inch AMOLED screen and a glass back, this budget model uses the same chip and 5000 mAh battery as the A16. This strategy shows a desire to offer a versatile device, without increasing the cost for the user.

Ergonomics and design: A smartphone that goes glass
The Galaxy A17 5G remains faithful to the lines of the Galaxy A range since the A26, A36, and A56 released in early 2025. Although its dimensions remain almost identical to those of the previous version (164.4 x 77.9 mm), this smartphone has undergone a slight diet, with 0.4 mm and 8 g less. As a result, it now weighs only 192 g for a thickness of 7.5 mm, so you won't feel weighed down like with a brick in your pocket.
As for materials, exit the usual plastic, hello to the glass fiber back! A choice that doesn't revolutionize the genre, but improves the feeling of robustness and quality in hand. Be careful, though; although it's pleasant to the touch and offers a more premium look, it's still quite prone to fingerprints. And with a rather slippery surface, it's best to be careful to avoid accidental drops. The polycarbonate side frame isn't luxurious, but it has the merit of being pleasant to handle.

Protected by Gorilla Glass Victus, the 6.7-inch AMOLED screen covers more than 86% of the front surface, due to a kind of prognathism. Here, it means that the "chin," i.e., the black border at the bottom of the display, seems far too prominent compared to current standards. We also regret that Samsung persists in housing the selfie camera of its entry-level devices in an old-fashioned teardrop-shaped notch.
At the rear, the A17 moves away from the look of the Galaxy S and adopts a more distinct identity with a triple camera module integrated into an oval block. We also find the Key Island, this slightly bulging area highlighting the volume control, as well as the power button which conceals a sometimes capricious fingerprint reader.

In terms of connectivity, the device supports 5G dual SIM, as well as NFC, Wi-Fi 5, and Bluetooth 5.3. In the absence of a 3.5 mm mini-jack, eSIM compatibility and the tray allowing storage to be extended up to 2 TB meet the needs of modern users. Finally, if the IP54 certification is a bit meager, it guarantees splash and dust resistance, a significant detail for a low-cost terminal.
